BAYELSA DECIDES 2019: LYON DECLARES WINNER, DEFEATS PDP CANDIDATE WITH WIDE MERGING

The All Progressive Congress candidate, Chief David Lyon, has emerged winner of Saturday’s governorship election held in Bayelsa state.

The INEC Returning Officer in the state, Prof. Faraday Orunmuwese declared the result on early morning today Monday, after much delay at the state headquarters of INEC in Yenagoa.

The returning officer, Prof. Orunmuwese was declared that David Lyon scored 352,552 votes to defeat his closest rival, Senator Douye Diri of the Peoples’ Democratic Party who garnered 143,172 votes.

After the collation of the results at the state INEC headquarters, the different votes between Mr. Lyon and Sen. Diri was 209,380 votes, which shows a wide merging distance.

Mr. Lyon, the APC candidate won in 6 of the 8 local government areas; Nembe, Brass, Yenagoa, Ogbia, Southern Ijaw and Ekeremor while Senator Douye Diri of PDP won in two local government areas Sagbama and Kolopuma/ Opukuma LG areas.

This is the first time since the advent of democracy in 1999 that an opposition party defeated ruling party, PDP in the state.

Meanwhile, Lyon’s victory at the Saturday’s governorship election and declaration by the state returning officer, has made him to be the fifth democratically gov-elect in the state since its creation in 1996.

Governorship Election:INEC YET TO COMMENCE COLLATION OF BAYELSA RESULTS

The Independent National Electoral Commission is yet to commence the formal collation of results of the Bayelsa State governorship election conducted on Saturday.

The exercise was scheduled by the commission to start at 10.00 a.m. Sunday morning at the Prof. Mahmood Yakubu Media Centre.

The commission’s Head, Voter Education and Publicity, Wilfred Ifogah, had on Saturday night circulated information that the collation would begin at 10.00 a.m. on Sunday.

However, more than one hour after the slated time, the collation of the poll results is yet to commence.

Accredited journalists, election observers and party agents had been waiting for officials of INEC to begin the exercise.

There is heavy security presence within and outside the commission’s office located along the Swali Market Road in Yenagoa.

Melaye confirmed the death of Olorunjuwon early on Sunday, November 17, saying the deceased paid the ultimate price for the liberation of the Kogi people. "My nephew Olorunjuwon who was shot at my pooling unit yesterday died this morning. My brother your death is a Supreme sacrifice in the struggle for the liberation of our people. Rest in peace aburo... So sad," Melaye mourned.
