 The Governor of Anambra state, Willie Obiano has explained why he supported President Buhari in the presidential election which held on Saturday, February 23, 2019.

Obiano said that he foresaw Buhari’s victory and knew that it will be impossible to beat the President.

According to The Cable, Obiano said Igbos need to learn how to be more subtle than confrontational.

The Anambra state Governor made this known in a statement issued to newsmen by his media aide, James Eze.

Foresight is a lonely path to tread. It breeds unexpected resentment and hate. Having foresight could turn you into a sudden object of anger and unwise attacks. But on the long run, it never leaves you without the enduring sheen of grace and glory. 

And that happens only when the people finally wake up to smell the coffee. Sadly, in the case of many farsighted leaders, this happens after they are out of office or after they are gone!

 “It is, in fact, hard to see a leader who has enough conviction to damn the consequences and swim against the current towards a hostile direction that he alone has seen as the only realistic choice left.

“And so, for those who still deride and mock governor Obiano for his foresight in the last presidential election, those who wilfully seek cheap opportunities to laugh at him, it might be worthwhile to always remember; that even the Scriptures warned us in First Corinthians chapter one verse twenty-seven, that sometimes, “God uses the foolish things of this world to confound the wise.”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has been barred from investigating a private jet loaded with money on February 15, 2019, the eve of the aborted presidential and National Assembly elections, Saturday national trust learnt on Friday.

Our correspondent gathered that the plane which was billed to fly to Ilorin, Kwara State, from Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos failed to take off due to the weight of the money on board.

Multiple sources said the EFCC operatives thereafter stormed the plane after a tip-off from some people about the cargo. They demanded the source of the money, its owner and destination.

The crew was said to have informed the operatives that the money was meant for election expenses in Kwara State, but the detectives reportedly insisted on taking away the cash haul.

Our sources said, “The EFCC operatives interrogated the crew and they claimed they were part of the government. They also gave a code which they assumed the operatives would understand, but the detectives insisted on taking away the money.

“However, a phone call came from the Presidential Villa ordering them to hands off the matter and clear off from the scene. Shortly after, armed soldiers took over the scene and the money was transferred into another plane which took off by 10pm that night.”

The Public Relations Officer, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Mrs Henrietta Yakubu, could not be reached for comments on the aircraft involved in the cash movement as she did not respond to calls to her phone. She had yet to respond to a text message as of the time of filing this report.

In his reaction, the acting EFCC spokesman, Tony Orilade, simply explained that he saw the alleged picture of the said aircraft being shared on the social media, noting that it could have been ‘created and recreated.’

He said, “On the plane-load of cash you asked about, I saw the pictures and we know that these pictures are things that can be manipulated to achieve the purposes by their producers. All the reports from the field are being reviewed and we shall come out with our position once it is ready.”

Orilade added, “Let’s not be carried away by the activities of mischief-makers; like the acting EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu said, we shall continue to do the right thing to make Nigeria a better country for everyone.”

Meanwhile, findings have indicated that the EFCC may not investigate the movement of huge cash in two bullion vans by a leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on the eve of the elections.

Although Tinubu admitted in an interview with journalists in Lagos that he transported the bulk money into his Ikoyi residence which is a violation of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, it was gathered that the anti-graft agency had no plan to probe the incident.

When asked about the money, the former governor said, “What is your issue with bullion vans in my house? I have not done any government business in the last five years. So I didn’t steal government money.

“And the bullion van was not said to contain election materials, so what offence have I committed? I decide where to keep it (money) and how to keep it.” 

But when confronted about the matter, the EFCC spokesman said the anti-graft commission had successfully curbed vote-buying in the elections and prevented a repeat of the incidents in Ekiti and Osun governorship elections.

“You will agree with me that to a large extent, we were able to curtail vote-buying with our men conspicuously positioned at polling booths across the country in the course of the elections,” he said.

Rochas Okorocha has faulted the party chairman for suspending him at a time when the party was celebrating its success for the Presidential and National Assembly elections, in spite his contributions to the partys success.Okorocha via a statement issued on Friday in Owerri by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Sam Onwuemeodo, was reacting to his suspension by the party.

He said the suspension was illegal and would not hold.

He alleged that the party had been overrun by crisis in the South-East states mainly because of the fraudulent manner with which primaries were conducted by the chairman.

The governor faulted the party chairman for suspending him at a time when the party was celebrating its success for the Presidential and National Assembly elections, in spite his contributions to the party's success.

In 2015, I joined the merger that gave birth to APC at the risk of my second tenure yet I won the governorship election.

I delivered 24 out of the 27 members of the House of Assembly for APC, two House of Representatives members and one senator.

When the APC members across the nation are still celebrating the success of the party in the Presidential and National Assembly elections, Oshiomhole in his wisdom, felt that the best action in the circumstance was to suspend two governors who did well in the election, even when he played safe in 2015 and 2019 in Edo without any known pressure, he said.

Okorocha said that APC would outlive the chairman, especially in the South-East and in Imo in particular, adding that men like him hardly sleep with their two eyes closed.

The governor linked  his suspension to the much talked about 2023 presidency for Ndigbo, adding that Oshiomole was against his ambition of becoming a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. According to the release, “We have been inundated with calls from well meaning Nigerians over the purported expulsion of Governor Rochas Okorocha by Adams Oshiomhole led National Working Committee (NWC) of All Progressives Congress, APC. “Adams Oshiomhole was determined right from the outset to destroy APC in the South-East and this was unknown to party Chieftains from the zone who had genuinely supported his chairmanship.” Okorocha said: “He is playing the politics of 2023 in 2019 and in playing it, he has thrown caution to the wind. “In all the South-East states there are crises and all arising from the fraudulent manner he Conducted the primaries. “In 2015, Governor Okorocha had joined the merger that gave birth to APC at the risk of his second tenure and was called all sorts of unprintable name.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has dismissed reports in some news outlets that its Presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar made some demands of President Muhammadu Buhari describing same as absolute falsehood and outright lies.

The party in a statement signed by its spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan yesterday, said the former Vice President “had not, and will never, make or accept any condition from President Buhari regarding the February 23, 2019 Presidential election.

The statement read: “The Buhari- led Presidency and the All Progressives Congress, APC, know that their electoral robbery cannot stand before any noble justices and are now attempting to use all sorts of blackmail and shenanigans to derail the quest by Nigerians to reclaim the stolen mandate at the tribunal.

“However, let it be known to President Buhari and the APC that Atiku Abubakar and the PDP are standing shoulder to shoulder with Nigerians in this collective determination to take back the stolen mandate and we are not ready for any form of negotiation with anybody on this matter.

“Our party and candidate remain committed to the huge sacrifices made by Nigerians in ensuring our collective victory as delivered at the polling units across the country. We are mindful of the pains that Nigerians are passing through since the subversion of their will at the polls; we are sensitive to the expectations that millions of compatriots place on our shoulders in this struggle and we will never let Nigerians down.

President Muhammadu Buhari: Next four years will be tough

President Muhammadu Buhari has warned his ministers that the next four years of the administration would be tough.

The president gave the warning at a special meeting with his cabinet ministers who were in the State House, on Friday in Abuja to congratulate him on his electoral victory.

According to the president, the new four-year mandate given to his administration by Nigerians will be tough as he pursues his campaign promises of securing the country, transforming the economy and the fight against corruption.

The president said: “My last lap of four years I think is going to be tough because people are very forgetful – that was why wherever I went I reminded them of the campaign by our party of the three fundamental issues – security because you have to secure a country or an institution to manage it properly.

“If you don’t secure it you can’t manage it no matter how much propaganda you put in place.

“Secondly, the economy, the unemployed able bodies is the problem of this country as a whole – more than 60 per cent are youths – that meant 35 years and below – they need to be kept busy.

“I realised that and I think God heard our prayers that the two previous rainy seasons were good and we had the foresight to get the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Central Bank to try and give soft loans to farmers so that able bodies that have land can go back to land.’’

The president said that his recent campaign tour of the 36 States of the federation and FCT had proven that he is medically fit to lead Nigeria for the next four years.

He said this was contrary to the belief of the opposition, who doubted his medical fitness.

Buhari, therefore, thanked God for giving him the strength and health to prove his critics wrong.

“I tried to visit the 36 states and Abuja, firstly, to prove to the other side that I’m fit. I tried to cover two states per day and secondly, not to make anybody feel that any state had been left out.

“So, I thank God that He gave me the strength and health to see through my plan and I think it is appreciated,’’ he said.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had on Wednesday declared Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the 2019 Presidential Election, held on Feb. 23.

Buhari was declared re-elected having polled 15,191,847 votes, winning in 19 states, to defeat other 72 candidates including Atiku Abubakar, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who scored 11, 255,978 votes.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr Boss Mustapha, who spoke on behalf of the members of the Federal Executive Council and the Leadership of the Public Service of Nigeria, said the meeting was meant to congratulate the president on his historic re-election.

“Your victory with a huge majority of votes cast is indeed a well-deserved success because it was a referendum on honesty, integrity uprightness and sincerity.

“The Change you promised four years ago to put the Nigerian economy on a sustainable development path; restore security of lives and property; and to fight corruption has laid the firm foundation for growth.

“Your commitment, dedication and purposeful leadership had indeed become the springboard that has taken us to the Next Level,’’ he added.

According to Mustapha, the leadership of the Public Service is also happy because the re-election will deepen the on-going reforms aimed at strengthening its capacity for the delivery of good governance.

He said: “For the records, we recall your reform achievements signposted by the introduction of the Treasury Single Account [TSA], Bank Verification Number (BVN), Presidential Initiative on Continuous Audit (PICA), the Open Government Partnership (OGP), the whistle blower policy, the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan (FCSSIP) 2017-2020, your commitment to the implementation of the Minimum Wage as well as to the welfare of the Nigerian workers.

“All of these have combined to transform the Public Service into an effective and productive machinery.’’

The SGF, who pledged the loyalty and support of members of FEC to the government, assured that they would facilitate the creation of an enabling environment for sustainable development of the nation.

“It is the prayer of all of us that in this second term, God will increase your wisdom and endow you with good health to enable you to expand the frontiers of the fulfilment of your promises. Indeed, our best years are still ahead of us as a nation.

“We salute your courage, firmness and fairness,’’ he added.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of congratulatory cards to the president by the SGF and the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Winfred Oyo-Ita.

Former governorship aspirant in Ekiti state, Mr. Kayode Ojo, has said the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari in the just- concluded presidential election reflected the Nigerians’ will.

Kayode described the re-election as well- deserved victory for the President, saying the clear cut difference in governance gave him the resounding victory.

He disclosed another four years of Buhari’s leadership will provide the much-desired impetus for good governance, the ongoing war on corruption, completion of ongoing infrastructural projects and boost our new image in the comity of nations.

In a statement he personally signed in Ado Ekiti on Thursday, Ojo said Buhari’s victory was a demonstration of the confidence Nigerians have in his leadership.

“The reelection of President Buhari and his vice, Prof., Osinbajo is well deserved victory and confirmed the trust Nigerians have in the President in particular and APC in general.

“The results of the elections showed that Nigerians recognized the contributions of the APC controlled government to the development of the country within the past four years,” Ojo said.

The APC chieftain saluted the relentless doggedness and tenacious gestures demonstrated by the APC National Leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu for standing against all forces in ensuring the electoral victory of President Buhari.

He also hailed Governor Kayode Fayemi for successfully delivering the three Senatorial Districts and the six seats of the House of Representatives for the APC.

Ojo urged Ekiti people to maintain the tempo in the forthcoming State Assembly election in the State schedule to hold on March 9.

Similarly, a House of Representatives member-elect in Ekiti South Federal Constituency II, Hon. Femi Bamisile, also said the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari is as a result of the love and trust of Nigerian masses for the President.

Bamisile, who also congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said: “The victory of President Buhari at the just concluded presidential election was a true reflection of the masses love for him against the notion of few elites.

“Therefore, Nigerian democracy has grown beyond what it used to be, especially in the areas of transparency, fairness and credibility of the electoral process.

“Many big names couldn’t make it during the poll whereas unknown names won.

“The latest development has proved pessimists wrong on the Nigerian electoral process. Nigerians are now having more confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commision INEC ability to deliver acceptable polls”.

The former Ekiti State House of Assembly Speaker noted that his experience during the on-going general elections had further broadened his knowledge on the value and importance of the electorate as the major players in democracy.

He said: “Politicians can now look down on voters at their own peril, but accord them the desired values and recognition through performance will surely guarantee you their votes to serve them.

“The beauty of the just concluded elections is that it will afford both politicians and electorate the opportunity to be more cordial and sincere in relationship in the game of politics,” he said.

According to him, his major priority at the lower chamber of the National Assembly will be, to contribute on bills and motions that will develop the country especially his constituency and Ekiti State in general.

“Many Nigerian laws are long over- due for a revisit inorder for them to have meaningful impacts on the lives of all Citizenry, hence all hands will be on deck to do the needful in this regard,” Bamisile said.

A takeover of Lagos by any means necessary is a “consolation prize” being contemplated by the camp of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Atiku Abubakar after a crushing defeat by President Muhammadu Buhari in last Saturday’s presidential polls, it was learnt last night.

The Nation reported that the move was one of the resolutions at an emergency strategy meeting held by the Atiku team when it became apparent that President Buhari had won by a wide margin, the first being a formal rejection of APC’s victory as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Buhari polled 15,191,847 votes to defeat Atiku, who scored 11,262,978.

Even as the PDP flag bearer is still mulling his legal team to challenge Buhari at the tribunal, his strategists believe that taking over Lagos, the nation’s commercial nerve centre, will enable the opposition party become an effective countervailing force to APC controlling Abuja, the political headquarters.

A similar bid was launched for Lagos in April 2015 by the then President Goodluck Jonathan with the deployment of dollars to induce voters after the PDP lost the presidential poll to the APC. The bid failed.

“To actualise the new plot, we can confirm that a huge war-chest has been mobilised by Atiku’s camp to finance ahead of the March 9 state election a vicious smear campaign against the National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, believed to have coordinated PDP’s defeat as the Co-Chairman of the APC Presidential Campaign Council,” a source said last night.

The source went on: “Specifically, Atiku’s hatchet men are to spread anti-Tinubu messages in the traditional media and social media, deploying any ‘means necessary’.

“The first leg of the strategy meeting, it was reliably gathered, held at highbrow Intercontinental Hotel on Kofo Abayomi, Victoria Island, Lagos Saturday night where the PDP governorship candidate in Lagos, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, met with Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi and a few others to perfect the plan to recruit a faction of Afenifere and willing human rights activists to create a facade that the anti-Tinubu campaign is the initiative of civil society organisations (CSOs).

“The support of the likes of Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, Mr. Yinka Odumakin has been secured in this connection.

“In fact, the inaugural press conference is to be addressed by Mr. Agbakoba and Odumakin, whose relentless media offensive against Buhari had failed to sway Yoruba votes to Atiku across the Southwest last Saturday.

“Afikuyomi, described last night as a ‘Judas’ after benefitting politically from Tinubu in APC, was said to have been part of the ‘Dubai retreat’ hosted late last year by the Atiku camp after winning the PDP presidential ticket to draw up a ‘war plan’ against Buhari.

To evade public scrutiny or being accused of ‘anti-party activity’ by APC, Afikuyomi was said to have opted out of the Dubai-Abuja flight and rather adopted a decoy by flying to Lagos through Uganda.

“Interestingly, Afikuyomi had been the chief coordinator of the second term bid by the outgoing Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos which crashed in the APC primaries held in October in 2018.

“Furthermore, the involvement of another Ambode’s core supporter, Mr. Wale Oluwo, in the latest plot against APC interest in Lagos set tongues wagging again last night.

“Oluwo, who resigned as the Lagos State Commissioner for Energy, has been described as commander in the anti-Tinubu plot, having superintended over the multi-billion Naira street lights projects exclusively under Ambode and has serially been fingered as the secret ‘emissary’ between Ambode and Agbaje.”

After his exit from the Lagos cabinet last October, Oluwo declared support for Agbaje’s governorship ambition.
But Governor Ambode has consistently denied any link whatsoever with the funding of Agbaje’s campaign.

Party elders, it was further learnt, were incensed following startling revelations of mouth-watering patronage Ambode had doled out to Afikuyomi even while most of them were shabbily treated.

“Among Ambode’s largesse to Afikuyomi is an eye-popping mansion located in the highbrow Ikeja GRA, the furnishing of which was said to have cost nothing less than N400 million”, the source claimed.

Lagos has always been coveted by the PDP. In 2003, the party made a failed attempt to seize the state, but failed as the South West zone then under the Alliance for Democracy fell into the PDP’s basket. The party also made vigorous attempts in 2011 and 2015, but also failed.
