DTSG Working To Alleviate Effects Of Flood

DTSG Working To Alleviate Effects Of Flood

Delta State Government is working assiduously to alleviate the effects of the flood which recently devastated parts of the state including Asaba, Warri, Ughelli and other towns and communities.

The Commissioner for Information, Mr. Patrick Ukah, stated this today (July 26, 2017) during a press conference on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting held in Tuesday at the Government House, Asaba.

Mr. Ukah said the Governor of the State, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, was very much concerned about the effects of the flood on the citizens of the state.
He  further stated that it would not be possible for now to quantify the damages done in government and other properties, incuding Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS), Asaba, because the relevant agencies are still taking stock.

Speaking on Camp 74 Asaba, the Commissioner made it clear that work on that area and other areas affected by the flood will receive due attention as soon as the rains eases off.

The Commissioner, who was accompanied by his Works counterpart, Hon. Chief James Augoye, further appealed to Deltans to be safety conscious by staying off flood prone areas while the Government is putting measures in place to stem the tide.

He revealed that in fulfillment of the Governor’s electioneering campaign promises, the State Executive Council approved  the construction of Trans Warri/Ode- Itsekiri Bridges and Access Roads (completion of 12.8 km main alignment), the award of the construction of Idheze by–pass to Okpe–Isoko, Isoko South Local Government Area to Rossurd Construction Limited, and the award of the rehabilitation of Aviara/Okpame Road and construction of Okpare/Okpawa Road in Isoko South Local Government Area.

Key-In To Benefit From Govt, Ukah Urges Anglican Parishioners

Key-In To Benefit From Govt, Ukah Urges Anglican Parishioners

Parishioners of the Anglican Communion have been urged to key into the prosperity for all Deltans agenda of the government of Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa in order to benefit from the SMART Agenda of the government.

The state Commissioner for Information, Mr. Patrick Ukah, made the call recently while delivering a paper to mark the 40th anniversary of the creation of Asaba Diocese of the Anglican Communion.

The Commissioner stated that some persons are missing out on the many platforms provided by the government to empower Deltans because such persons lack the needed information hence the need to enlighten the parishioners.

Speaking on the different platforms, Mr. Ukah stated that the governor, among others, repositioned the agricultural sector since the state can boast of major agricultural products like rubber, oil palm, rice, yam, cassava, potato, tomato and fish.

Among these, the government is laying more emphasis on three key areas for value chain development. They include oil palm, cassava and aquaculture, while also encouraging cultivation of other crops such as tomato and rice.

The Commissioner revealed that as part of deliberate effort of the government to focus on agriculture, the state is planning to establish centralized geographical area for agro–processing, agribusiness, marketing and value adding activities supported by a dedicated concentration of infrastructural facilities and amenities. The initiative, he said, has reached advanced stage as Ogwashi Uku was chosen for the pilot project which is estimated to cost 30 million US Dollars.

Mr. Ukah stated that other areas of achievements include distribution of 220,000 Improved oil palm seedlings to farmers for enhanced yields, institution of two rice mills in Obior and Ikweghu – Agbarha, institution of two cluster fish farms in Mbiri in Ika North East and Ewulu in Aniocha South Local government areas, establishment of a cane rat cutter (Grass Cutter) and goat multiplication centre at ADP Ibusa, and rehabilitating fisheries laboratories in Warri.

He therefore urged the parishioners, especially the youths, to key into the different programmes of the government aimed at empowering all in order to achieve the prosperity of all Deltans mantra of the Okowa-led administration.
In his remarks, the Bishop of Asaba Diocese, Anglican Communion,  Rt. Rev. Justus Mogekwu, commended the state government for all it has been doing to empower Deltans and appealed to the government to assist schools that were returned to the Missions since it has not been easy to run the schools from the time they were returned.

Ukah Condemns Proponents Of Ethnicity, Nepotism, Hate Speeches

Delta State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Patrick Ukah, has condemned the attitude of some Nigerians who are fanning the embers of ethnicity, nepotism and hate speeches and called on those involved to change their attitude positively in the way they think and act.

The Commissioner stated this today (10/08/2017) during an interaction with the State Director of National Orientation Agency (NOA), Delta State Directorate, Mr. Okoro Ivan Jifbioced, when he led a team of his staff on a courtesy visit to the Commissioner in his office.

He also said that the Delta State Government will continue to do all that is necessary to ensure that the unity and progress of Nigeria is not compromised

Mr. Ukah stated that the Delta State Government will continue to work with all well meaning Nigerians to make the Nigerian project a success.
The Commissioner stated that the state Ministry of Information will collaborate with the Agency to inform, educate and sensitize all, especially Deltans, on the policies and programmes of both the federal and state governments.

Mr. Ukah noted that Delta State also has an Orientation Agency whose duties are in agreement with that of the NOA promising that the Ministry of Information will support the Agency as it carries out its mandate in the state.

Earlier, Mr. Okoro Ivan Jifbioced told the commissioner that he was in his office to get acquainted with the ministry having resumed as the State Director of the NOA a few weeks ago.

Moreover, the need for the Agency to work closely with the ministry prompted the visit since the two government agencies are very important in the area of social mobilization, sensitization and advocacy on behalf of the federal and state governments respectively.

He therefore appealed for assistance from the Delta State Government in order to carry out the Agency's core mandate in the state which included 'change begins with me' and doing the right thing which will be as a result of thinking the right way.

FACULTY OF BASIC MEDICAL SCIENCES COLLEGE OF MEDICINE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS 5TH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING AND SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE

FACULTY OF BASIC MEDICAL SCIENCES
COLLEGE OF MEDICINE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS
5TH  ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING AND SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE

Being the welcome address at the 5th  scientific conference of the faculty of basic medical sciences by professor Fatimah Abdulkareem, chairman, scientific conference committee, faculty of basic medical sciences, college of medicine of the university of Lagos held at the old great hall, college of medicine university of Lagos on Thursday 2nd June 2016.

Protocols….

I welcome you all to the 5th scientific conference of the faculty of basic medical science of the University of Lagos. The faculty being the bedrock of medicine is involved in various collaborative research aimed at improving the health of Nigerians. The annual scientific conference therefore serves as an avenue to showcase these research activities.

In the last few decades, several infectious diseases have emerged and are re-emerging; over 70% of which are zoonotic. This emergence has been attributed to changes in human and animal characteristics, climate, ecosystem, socio-economic and political development, inadequate public health control, movement of animal and man amongst others. These diseases are clinically distinct and therefore prevention and control as well as management require more unique strategies based on fundamental research rather than the traditional approach used for diseases transmitted from human to human.

In Nigeria, some lessons have been learnt from Ebola and Lassa fever virus infections; yet many more of these will emerge and so we should be prepared. Researchers in the area of emerging zoonotic disease are usually brave and committed professionals. We have therefore invited a renowned academic and astute researcher with over 25years experience and research contribution on gaemorrhagic  fever and arthropod borne viruses. Prof David Olaleye, Prof  & Head, Virology department of the college of medicine, university of Ibadan as the guest lecturer at this conference.

Also over 50 abstracts are being presented at this conference as oral and posters and these are from all the departments in the faculty, but also from faculties of clinical sciences, pharmacy and from outside the university of Lagos.

A preconference held yesterday on manuscript writing for postgraduate students, resident doctors and junior academic staff in the college. According to Albert Einstein. “The whole of science is nothing more than a refinement of everyday thinking” but no matter how excellent a research work is, it must be written and published to have better impact of scientific community. With the success recorded at the workshop, it is our hope the barriers to effective writing have been broken and many more peer-reviewed publications will begin to emerge henceforth.

It has become a norm in our faculty to honor notable and renowned persons or institutions that have contributed to the faculty or the college of medicine. Thus today we want to honor Professor Babajide Alo, the immediate past deputy vice chancellor, academic & research who successfully completed his tenure and has impacted positively on our faculty.

This year, we have also decided to acknowledge excellent in teaching, research and service amongst academic members of the faculty. it is hoped to encourage and motivate academic staff and spur all to do better. It should be noted that an academic staff is not only expected to teach, do research and attend conferences, other contributions within and outside the university are also statutory responsibilities that must be taken seriously. We are therefore instituting two different awards today:

1.       “best teacher award” for the faculty of basic medical sciences(through students’ assessment)
2.       “faculty of basic medical sciences award of academic excellence”(junior and senior categories)
Our appreciation goes to the special guest of honor, DR. A.G.O .
