Reactions trail sale of Kano player for N5,000

Mixed reactions have trailed the sale of a Kano State-based player, Ibrahim Iriyos, for N5, 000.

A report had surfaced online on Tuesday, stating that the player in a division two club in the Kano FA league, was signed by Super Stars Club from Aston Villa Gano.

BBC Pidgin reports that the transfer is the most expensive in Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area, where both clubs are based.

Striker Iriyos’ goal scoring prowess was said to have attracted the management of Super Stars to him.

Though Chairman of Kano Football Association, Sharif Inuwa, said both clubs were not registered, he explained that there was no offence in selling a player for such an amount.

According to him, the amount a player could be sold or bought is negotiable among the two clubs involved in the transfer.

He said, “We don’t have any club like Super Stars or Aston Villa Gano. In Kano, we have our own rules that you should not use foreign names for clubs. We use local names for clubs.

“If the player decides to leave a club and he meets the requirement and breaches no rule, he can leave the club. The player must fulfil the law and conditions for transfer.

“The fee is negotiable between the two clubs involved. There is no offence in price. No fixed price at all. But it must be properly agreed upon among the two clubs to avoid any problem.

However, the sale of the player for N5,000 has caused division among football fans.

While some argued that monetising the transfer was a form of advancement, others said the price should have been more than N5,000.

One of the fans, Kunle Alabi, said, “That’s awesome. The passion for the game supersedes  that of money. Humble beginners become great.”

Olusegun Taiwo encouraged the player not to be embarrassed, saying, “Don’t worry, Nigerians will refer to this picture and this amount by the time you will be sold and bought for billions of dollars.”

“At least he was purchased; many could not worth that much on a pitch. One day, Barcelona would buy you up,” Adamu Bello added.

But Olalekan Adetule disagreed with the amount the player was sold.

He said, “Whether amateur or pro, how can you sell a player for N5,000 and you calling it ‘days of little beginning’. It’s another form of slave trade – and a very cheap one.

“Nigerians would just be turning everything to a sermon of hope and prayer points rather than address the real issue.”

“While this may be a legitimate transfer, the fee makes it look like human trafficking,” Ubani added.

Buhari vs Atiku: Tribunal rules today, APC, PDP confident of victory

The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja will on Wednesday (today) deliver judgment in the case instituted by the Peoples Democratic Party and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, challenging the outcome of the February 23, 2019 presidential election.

The petitioners asked the five-man tribunal, led by Justice Mohammed Garba, to nullify President Muhammadu Buhari’s victory at the poll and either declare them the winner or order the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct a rerun.

A senior member of the petitioners’ legal team, Mike Ozekhome (SAN), confirmed to one of  our correspondents that the hearing notice for the judgment was served on lawyers representing the parties to the case on Tuesday.

“I can confirm to you that the judgment will be delivered 9am tomorrow (Wednesday),” he said.

Ozekhome (SAN) expressed hope that his clients’ case would succeed.

He said, “My expectation, like the majority of Nigerians and international observers, is that the petition will succeed. This is because the petitioners have proved their case. The evidence was overwhelming and it was clear to everyone that the respondents had no defence. The judiciary will be courageous and bold to deliver justice.”

We expect victory, says APC

When contacted, the APC National Publicity Secretary, Lanre Issa-Onilu, said the party was expecting victory because the PDP’s petition lacked substance.

He said, “We are expecting nothing short of victory. The PDP only helped us to prove our case beyond reasonable doubt. Their petition turned out to be a noise and lacks substance.

“We presented certificate from Cambridge and WAEC which they could not fault. They couldn’t bring anything from Cambridge and WAEC to say what we presented was fake.

“The results they submitted upon which they wanted the court to award them victory were contradictory. They simply don’t have a case.”

We are hopeful Atiku’ll be winner – PDP

The Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr Diran Odeyemi, on Tuesday said the party members were of high hopes that the tribunal would declare Atiku as the winner of the election.

Odeyemi said, “We expect the judiciary as the last hope of the common man to dispense justice more so as Atiku has proved his case beyond any reasonable doubt and declare  him the winner of the election.

FCCPC, SEC sign MoU on merger review -SINL NIGERIA

Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to simplify the process of company merger.

In separate statements on Monday, both agencies said the MoU would foster “a mutually beneficial engagement and seamless operation of the mandates of both organisations.”

The MoU, according to FCCPC, came four months after the two organisations established a joint merger review desk as an interim measure to ensure continuing processing of pending and emerging transactions.

A key role of FCCPC is merger review, which was, prior to the MoU, a statutory role of SEC, it said.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Acting Director-General of SEC, Ms Mary Uduk, said the agreement would ultimately strengthen the nation’s economy.

On his part, the Chief Executive Officer of FCCPC, Mr Babatunde Irukera, said the interim arrangement had been acclaimed in the industry as exemplary of how to proffer solutions, promote confidence in the regulatory ecosystem and enable businesses.

The parties agreed to cooperate and collaborate in performing their individual duties, particularly in information sharing, consumer complaints in the capital market, investigation, enforcement and compliance, including capacity building.

Kalu’s Seat: Tribunal Orders Supplementary Election Within 90 Day

Umuahia (chidimma Ihenacho) – The National and State Assemblies Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, on Monday ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to organise a supplementary election in Abia North Senatorial District within three months.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in this year’s National Assembly election, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, had approached the tribunal, headed by Justice Akintoye Cornelius, to challenge the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu.

The PDP candidate alleged over-voting among other contentious issues raised in the February poll.

INEC returned Kalu elected in the poll.

The supplementary election, which will be conducted within 90 days, will take place in eight wards within Arochukwu Local Government Area and among other polling units in Ohafia and Isukwuato local government areas where votes were cancelled in Abia North Senatorial District.

Kalu was declared winner of the election by the Returning Officer, Dr. Charles Anumudu.

Ohuabunwa described Kalu’s victory as excess electoral fraud and daylight robbery.

He prayed the tribunal to overturn the INEC result.

Ohuabunwa’s lawyers told the tribunal that 38,526 votes were cancelled during collation of the result declared by the Returning Officer, Dr. who declared Kalu winner by polling 31,201 votes against Ohuabunwa who polled 20,80

CANCER: Death Rate of 72,000 Nigerians annually is worrisome_Osinbajo

  Chidimma Ihenacho in Abuja

Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has decried Nigeria’s record of 102,000 new cases of cancer annually, with 72,000 deaths from the number. Osinbajo Nasarawa SUBEB spends N10bn on projects in 2 years — Chairman(Opens in a new browser tab) According to him, the lack of adequate equipment and facilities for the treatment of the disease in the country is worrisome considering the scarcity of government resources. Osinbajo spoke at the inauguration of the second Linear Accelerator Radiotherapy machine at National Hospital, Abuja, on Friday. The machine was donated by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation(NNPC) and Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo). The Vice President, who urged Nigerians to adopt healthy lifestyles to reduce the country’s burden of the disease through prevention, noted that early detection of cancer would increase chances for successful treatment. Osinbajo said the newly inaugurated facilities will not only bridge the gap in cancer detection and treatment but also curb the spate of medical tourism by Nigerians. He called on other corporate bodies to come to the succour of Nigerians suffering from cancer, saying: “We cannot leave it all to the government. Government resources are scarce. SAVE ALIVE AROUND YOUR ENVIRONMENT

Chidimma Ihenacho in Abuja
So lake, a primary school teacher, was transferred to a different school and immediately appointed as a class teacher of a class five class.
On her first day in her class, she noticed that a boy named Kola was different from the rest of the pupils because he was always lonely, out of place, dirty and never used to do homework. Folake also realized that most pupils in the class had a negative attitude towards him.

Folake decided to investigate and find out the problem. She decided to review the file containing the records for KOLA.  She was very surprised by what she found out.

Kola's class one teacher wrote and said "Kola is a good pupil with a ready laugh. He does his homework neatly and has many friends".

The class two teacher wrote, Kola is a good pupil with a ready laugh. He does his homework neatly but he is troubled because his mother has a terminal illness and life at home must be a struggle"

The class three teacher wrote, "his mother's death has been hard on him. He tries to do his best but his father doesn't show much interest".

The class four teacher wrote, "Kola is withdrawn. He doesn't do his homework and has very few friends".

By now teacher Folake had known where the problem was, and she was very ashamed of herself. And from that day onwards she decided to pay much attention on Kola and to assist him as much as possible.

Towards the end of the year, the pupils in the class decided to bring presents to teacher Folake. All the pupils in the class brought expensive presents which were wrapped in coloured paper except Kola. His present was wrapped clumsily in old pieces of newspaper. The rest of the pupils laughed at him when they saw what he brought.

Folake felt great pain as she opened the present that Kola had brought, she found an old bottle of perfume which was a quarter full and an old bracelet which had several beads missing. To stifle the laughter from the pupils, teacher Folake exclaimed "this bracelet is very beautiful" and wore it. She also took the bottle of perfume, tapped it on her wrist and put it on.

In the evening, when the rest of the pupils were going home, Kola deliberately remained behind, and when he was sure that all the pupils had left, he went to see teacher Folake.  He entered her office, and summoning enough courage he said to her, "teacher, today you smelled the way my mum used to".When Kola left, Folake  locked herself in the office and cried for more than an hour.

The following year, Kola wrote a letter to teacher FOLAKE.  He told her that she was the best teacher that he ever had in his life.

Six years later, he wrote another letter, he told her that he had finished secondary school and  he was the best in his class. He added that "she was still the best teacher he ever had in his life".

Eight years later, he wrote another letter. He told her that he had completed his bachelor's degree in medicine was now a doctor. He added that she was still "the best teacher he ever had in his life".

The following year, he wrote another letter. He told her that he had found a girl and was going to get married. He explained that his father had died one year earlier, and was wondering whether Folake woukd accept to attend the wedding and sit in the place reserved for the mother of the groom. Of course Folake accepted and during the wedding, she was putting on the same bracelet with several beads missing and she was also putting on the same perfume that Kola remembered his mother was putting on the day she died. Now l ask a question, have you ever helped someone you don't like? Can you do good just to help someone get up even when they cannot pay you back when they are not there?

murder, and drag such a person into the
bus stating that he/she is wanted at the station. They have used this conversation
well and many have being trapped in it.

Court Announced Shiites' Movement terrorist group

Joy Musa,Grace Obi

The Federal Government has obtained a court order to proscribe the  Shiites’ organisation formally referred to as the Islamic Movement in Nigeria.

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday ordered the proscription of the Shiites’ movement as protests by the Islamic organisation rock Abuja.

Saturday NATIONAL TRUST reports that Justice Nkeonye Maha issued the order in a ruling in which  she also designated the activities of the Shiite organisation in any part of Nigeria “as acts of terrorism and illegality.”

The court restrained “any person or group of persons” from participating in any form of activities involving or concerning the IMN “under any name or platform” in Nigeria.

To complete the process of the proscription of the group, the court ordered the Attorney-General of the Federation “to publish the order proscribing the respondent (Islamic Movement in Nigeria) in the official gazette and two national dailies.”

The judge gave the order following an ex parte application by the Federal Government.

A copy of the ex parte application marked FHC/ABJ/CS/876/2019 which was sighted by Saturday NATIONAL TRUST on Friday, was filed in the name of the ‘Attorney-General of the Federation.’

Justice Maha granted the four prayers contained in the application shortly after the Solicitor-General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Justice, Mr Dayo Apata, argued the application on Friday.

The IMN was the sole respondent to the application but the group was not represented by a lawyer on Friday since it was an ex parte hearing.

Ruling on Friday, the court made “a declaration that the activities of the respondent (Islamic Movement in Nigeria) in any part of Nigeria amounts to acts of terrorism and illegality.”

The court said, “An order of this honourable court proscribing the existence and activities of the respondent (Islamic Movement in Nigeria) in any part of Nigeria, under whatever form or guise either in groups or as individuals by whatever names they are called.

“An order restraining any person or group of persons from participating in any manner whatsoever in any form of activities involving or concerning the prosecution of the collective intention or otherwise of the respondent (Islamic Movement in Nigeria) under any other name or platform howsoever called or described in any part of Nigeria.

“An order directing the applicant (the AGF) to publish the order proscribing the respondent (Islamic Movement in Nigeria) in the official gazette and two national dailies.”

The Federal Government had filed the application before the court on Thursday, barely 72 hours after a protest by members of the group in Abuja led to a bloody clash between them and the police.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, Federal Capital Territory Command, Usman  Umar, and a Channels Television journalist, Precious Owolabi, died in the clash with many others injured and property destroyed.

The Shiites have for over two years been regularly taking to the streets particularly in Abuja to demand the release of their leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, and his wife, Zeenat.

The couple has been in the custody of the Department of State Services since December 2015 after a bloody clash between members of the group and soldiers in the convoy of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, in Zaria, Kaduna State.

In the application for the proscription of the group, the Federal Government accused the group of carrying out coordinated violent protests in the country.

It alleged that the “aggressive activities” of members of the group had led to the loss of lives and destruction of private and public property in the Federal Capital Territory and other cities in northern Nigeria.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations in the FCT Command, Nyinnaya Adiogu, who deposed to the affidavit filed in support of the application, also alleged that the Shiites engaged in series of illegal activities,  “which are inimical to the corporate interest of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Such activities, according to Adiogu, who said he was briefed by the Inspector-General of Police and the Solicitor-General of the Federation included setting up of a para-military guard called ‘HURRAS’.

The group was also accused of “nefarious activities”, murder, attacks on security agents and provocative preaching and hate speeches while working towards an agenda of creating an Islamic State in Nigeria.

The affidavit, which highlighted what it described as “series of violent and unlawful activities” of the group since 1991, stated that the activities of the IMN members under the guise of clamouring for the release of their leader had not only heightened tension and insecurity in the country but also earned the country negative rating globally.

The affidavit stated in part, “On July 22, 2019, the respondent’s members again launched another vicious cycle of violent protests around the Federal Secretariat (Abuja), during which they set a sub-station/Ambulance Bay of the National Emergency Management Agency, containing a truck and an ambulance on fire.

“A Deputy Commissioner of Police, Usman Umar, in charge of Operations in the FCT; a national youth corps member by the name of Precious Owolabi, reporting for Channels TV and others were killed by the protesters. (Copies of media reports by The NationDaily TrustLeadershipPunch , National trust and The Sunnewspapers dated July 23, 2019, on this incident are attached herewith and marked as Exhibit FGN 4A, 4B, 4C, 4D and 4E).

“The violent and aggressive activities of the members of the respondent under the guise of clamouring for the release of their leader have not only heightened tension and insecurity in the country, but it is also earning the country negative rating globally.

“Both the US and UK governments have already issued travel warnings on Nigeria on account of these violent protests which are equally deleterious to foreign investments.

It recalled that before the July 22, 2019 incident, the group’s members, in a violent protest on July 9, 2019, while trying to force their way into the National Assembly complex, “inflicted fatal injuries on policemen stationed at the National Assembly, shot two policemen and also injured other policemen with stones and clubs,  damaged police vehicles and other vehicles belonging to visitors and staff members of the National Assembly who also sustained varying degrees of injuries.”

The affidavit also stated the “nefarious activities” of the group, to include, “unauthorised blocking of public highway (especially the Zaria-Kano Highway during their processions), engagement in illegal road traffic functions, illegal roadblocks, imposition of illegal curfews and checkpoints, raids on police posts, prevention of arrest of their members, invasion of court premises to abort legal proceedings involving respondent members, refusal to submit to ordinary security checks, and attacks on security agents which led to the death of Corporal Dan Kaduna Yakubu;

“Setting up of a para-military guard known as ‘HURRAS’ through which the respondent has been terrorising local residents; respondent has also instituted unregistered security outfits and performed paramilitary ceremonies, hoisting of flag, combat exercises, parades and inspection by the respondent leader reminiscent of state authority.

“Provocative preaching and hate speeches aimed at inciting members against non-members while working towards its agenda of creating an Islamic State in Nigeria.

“Brazen acts of disrespect of Nigerian laws and non-recognition of constituted authorities, refusal to operate within the ambit of the law, failure to register with the appropriate authorities.”

The affidavit also recalled the clash between Shiites and soldiers in the Chief of Army Staff’s convoy in Zaria on December 14, 2015.

It recalled similar clashes between members of the IMN with “security forces in Kaduna” in 1991, and another incident in 1996 when the members of the group allegedly “seized and decapitated a Christian, alleging that his wife used pages from the Quran to clean their baby.”

It also alleged that in June 2005, the group “clashed with emirate authorities in Sokoto over access to the city’s central mosque.”

It alleged that in July 2007, the group “murdered” a Sunni cleric in Sokoto, Umar Dan Maishiya, “for being highly critical of Shiites.”

It added as part of the group’s unlawful activities that the activities of the respondent’s members in Gyallesu, Zaria and environs have been threatening the peace and security of the affected areas over the years.

“Constant conflicts with local communities and forceful takeover or appropriation of mosques not belonging to the respondent in Kaduna and Kano states as well as other northern states.

“Violent protests, creating ethnoreligious strifes and other criminal acts of aggression against individuals and communities which often results in deaths, grievous bodily harm and destruction of property.

“The respondent has over the years manifested its penchant for launching attacks on security agents.”

We won’t abandon our religion –Shiites

However, the spokesperson for the group, Ibrahim Musa,  said the government could not proscribe the movement, pointing out that its members were Muslims practising Islam as “revealed” by Prophet Muhammed.

He said the group was neither an association nor a political party that could be proscribed by fiat.

Musa, who spoke to Saturday NATIONAL TRUST on Friday, noted that the IMN was a mass movement and could not be made to abandon its religion just like that.

Musa said, “Firstly, we are not an organisation or association or a political party that can be proscribed by fiat.

“We are Muslims practising Islam as revealed to Prophet Muhammed under the leadership of his family. Ours is a mass movement, hence we can’t abandon our religion just like that.

“We don’t bear arms, we don’t force others to join us, we are just demanding justice within the ambit of the law, therefore, proscribing us won’t work.

“We can’t say this is what we will do if we are proscribed, because it just won’t work. We are in each and every facet of life like other citizens.”

Three of our members died in police custody, Shiites claim

The IMN also said three of its members who were shot and held in police custody had died.

The sect explained that the deceased were arrested during Monday clash between its members and the police during which about 13 persons, including a deputy commissioner of police, died in Abuja.

The President, Media Forum of IMN, Musa, in a statement in Abuja on Friday, said the three detainees died as a result of bullet wounds they sustained during the incident.

The Federal Capital Territory police spokesman, DSP Anjuguri Manzah, could not be reached for comments as calls to his phone rang out. He had yet to reply to a text message as of the time of filing this report.

FG, IMN  may explore truce as negotiator meets El-Zakzaky

Meanwhile, the Federal Government may have begun moves to negotiate with the IMN in order to end the sect’s violent agitations for the release of its leader, El-Zakzaky, and his wife, Zeenat.

However, the development had yet to be independently verified as of the time of filing this report on Friday

A senior IMN member, Abdulrahman Abubakar, who confirmed the development on Friday, said the movement was waiting for the government to set up a committee that would negotiate with the Shiite members.

Abubakar, who is the coordinator, Free El-Zakzaky Campaign, explained that the representative of the European country handling the negotiations had met with El-Zakzaky in custody to hear from him.

Also, other sources said the Federal Government might have opened talks with the IMN to stop their protests against the continued detention of their leader.

Sources at the Nigerian Army Guards Brigade, Abuja, told our correspondent that the FG was not happy with the protests, which turned violent.

At the office of the National Security Adviser, a top source told our correspondent that he was not aware of any negotiator meeting .

The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari will submit the list of ministerial nominees for the consideration and approval of the red chamber this week.

Lawan who stated this at plenary on Wednesday explained that the executive arm of government was working hard to ensure that the list was ready early enough before the senators proceed on their annual two-month recess.

The President of the Senate was reacting to a point of order raised by Senator Bassey Akpan to the effect that the delay in the submission of the list could affect the holidays of the senators.

Lawan, however, assured his colleagues and Nigerians that President Buhari would send the list to the Senate before the week runs out.

He also expressed confidence that the nominees would be screened by the upper chamber before the annual vacation which would commence on July 26.

Joy Musa, Abuja

Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana has said that the Senate ad hoc committee was wrong to have questioned embattled lawmaker, Senator Elisha Abbo, on Tuesday.

Falana told The National Trust that although the Senate had a right to discipline its members, Abbo could not be questioned because the matter was already in court and questioning him now would amount to subjudice.

He noted that Abbo had already been arraigned before a magistrate court, pleaded not guilty and granted bail.

The senior advocate noted that the Senate rules clearly state that when a matter is before a court of law, the Senate cannot discuss such a matter.

The activist said, “We all watched the video showing the senator allegedly assaulting a lady but we all demanded justice and the police have already arraigned him. The matter is now before a court and Senator Abbo is a defendant.

“It is, therefore, wrong for the Senate to sit and investigate a matter publicly while the matter is ongoing in court. That is subjudice. The Senate rules are clear that when a matter is in court, the Senate does not dabble into it.”

Abbo, who represents Adamawa-North senatorial district, was caught on video assaulting a shop attendant in a sex toy shop.

The video sparked outrage across the country with different rights groups demanding his prosecution.

The Senate President subsequently set up an ad hoc committee headed by Senator Sam Egwu of Ebonyi State while Lagos Central lawmaker, Senator Tinubu; Senator Stella Oduah of Anambra-North, Mathew Urhoghide, Dauda Aliu Jika,  Sani Musa,  and Danladi Sankara are members.

The committee was asked to submit its report within two weeks.

Before the committee could sit on Tuesday, however, the police had already arraigned Abbo the previous day.

Rapture Alert :The end is HERE

Rapture  Alert:By Papa Adeboye

ADEBOYE'S TESTIMONY
I saw it again. This time more scary. The end-time is more than nigh. It will happen like a flash unexpected and time shall be no more for repentance. In my dream, it was as if God shut his ears. I saw multitude of people running into a church. But inside that church, screaming and shouting everywhere; people making utterances to heaven. Behold it was as if a strange spirit entered into some people more clearly, I remember seeing an old man who was beside me whom the said spirit entered into and as he let out a cry, he disappeared and few other people. At that point, I realised that the rapture has taken place. I cried the more. Immediately, the devil took over and started making mockery of the left over Christians. He had a register of everyone's name...At this point, I woke up. The end is more than near. What breaks my heart the most is that many people in the church will not make it if Jesus comes now? Many are unaware that the end is near. Don't tell me that it's advancement in technology or development. If any area of your life is not in sync with God's word - Repent and be converted. If you miss heaven you can never miss hell...think about it. Hell is not a pretty place, the worst part is that it is for eternity...Don't keep this message and don't get annoyed when u receive this just do the whole world a favour and keep broadcasting 📣📣the Lord Jesus coming, u might save a lost soul. NEWS

Chidimma Ihenacho, Abuja

The Peoples Democratic Party on Thursday said it has set up a committee to investigate the conduct of its lawmakers in the National Assembly elections.

The party had directed its members to vote Ali Ndume, as the Senate President and  Umar Bargo as the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

But the annointed candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Ahmed Lawan, emerged as the Senate President while another APC annointed candidate, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, emerged as the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, after the ‘PDP 86th National Executive Committee’ meeting in Abuja, told journalists that the PDP would investigate what happened.

He stated that the party had already set up a committee to probe NASS elections as it related to the party.

He, however, declined to name members of the committee.

He said, “The party has set up a committee to investigate what happened in NASS election as it concerns the party.”

The PDP spokesman also said the party had raised the governorship nomination fee ahead of the Kogi and Bayelsa States governorship elections from the initial N5m to N20m.

He added that the expression of interest fee remained N1m, saying the nomination fee for female aspirants remained free.

He stated that the party took into consideration the weak Nigeria’s economy, the need to conduct free, fair and credible primaries, as well as rising printing costs before arriving at the new fee.

The date when Father's Day is celebrated varies from country to country [Getty Images]

Father's Day is being celebrated in many countries the world over on Sunday, recognising the contribution that fathers and father figures make to the lives of families and children.

But where does it come from and when is it celebrated in different parts of the world?

When is Father's Day?

Father's Day varies from country to country. In Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States it is celebrated on the third Sunday of June.

It is also observed on the same date in Qatar, Argentina, France, Greece, India, Ireland, Mexico, Pakistan, Singapore, and Venezuela.

In Germany, Father's Day is marked 40 days after Easter, while Australia and New Zealand celebrate it on the first day of September.

Russia continues the Soviet tradition of celebrating "Man's Day" on Defender of the Fatherland Day - February 23 - which marks the first mass draft into the Red Army.

In Thailand, Father's Day is on December 5 - the birthday of late King Bhumibol, who is considered the father of the nation.

China celebrates Father's Day on August 8 - the eighth day of the eighth month - because the word for eight in Chinese is "ba" and the term for father is "ba-ba".

What is the story behind Father's Day?

The appreciation of fatherhood dates back to at least 1508, when history's first mention appeared in Southern European tradition.

In the US, Father's Day was not celebrated outside Catholic traditions until the 20th century.

The date finds it origins when Sonora Smart Dodd, the daughter of American Civil War veteran William Jack Smart, was 16 years old and her father became a widower and was left to raise his children alone.

According to reports, in 1909, Dodd was listening to a Mother's Day sermon when she realised the need for a day to celebrate fathers, including her own.

Inspired, Dodd drew up a petition for the first Father's Day, which she said should be celebrated on her father's birthday in early June.

Dodd convinced several local church communities to participate, but they pushed the date to late June, giving them more time to prepare.

She continued her mission, determined to elevate Father's Day to the status of a national holiday.

In 1970, the US Congress passed legislation on Father's Day's national status, and President Nixon signed the resolution into law two years later, recognising it nationally.

Today, the celebration has become an important commercial event with gift ideas and promotions showing up in shopping centres in the build-up to the day.

According to MuchNeeded, in the UK and the US, 75 percent of men are expected to celebrate the occasion this year

US releases video it claims shows Iran removing mine from tanker

"The Americans have sent a team to board one of the two tankers that have been hit to collect more evidence.

"Also, the foreign minister of the UAE has said his country has submitted more evidence to the Security Council … [which they say shows the incident] was state-sponsored. There wasn't a mention of Iran, but Saudi Arabia and the UAE have from day one supported the American version of events," Vall said.

Both sides have also continued to beat the drums of war.

"The Americans say they are capable of waging a war and forcing Iran to stop sabotaging the waterways of the Gulf and disrupting oil supplies to the world.

"Iranians, on the other hand, are saying they have done nothing wrong, but if forced to war, they are ready to defend themselves," said Vall.

Gulf response

UAE's Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Saturday called on world powers "to secure international navigation and access to energy", a plea echoed by regional ally Saudi Arabia after the incident sent crude oil prices soaring.

Saudi Arabia calls for 'decisive' action over tanker attacks

Iran has repeatedly warned in the past that it could block the strategic Hormuz Strait in a relatively low-tech, high-impact countermeasure to any attack by the US.

Doing so would disrupt oil tankers travelling out of the Gulf region to the Indian Ocean and global export routes.

The UAE's Sheikh Abdullah, whose country is bitterly opposed to Iranian influence in the region, called for a de-escalation of tensions.

"We remain hopeful in attaining a broader framework for cooperation with Iran," he said at a summit in Bulgaria.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia's Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih called for a "swift and decisive" response to threats against energy supplies after Thursday's "terrorist acts".

Vessels head to port

The Japanese tanker's Tokyo-based operator Kokuka confirmed on Saturday the stricken vessel was heading to port in the UAE.

"We still don't know if the tanker goes to Khor Fakkan or Fujairah as they are very close," said a spokesperson, referring to the two Emirati ports on the Gulf of Oman.

Maritime experts would then seek to transfer the highly flammable cargo to shore, according to an unnamed official quoted by Japanese state media.

The other ship, the Front Altair, has left Iran's territorial waters, multiple sources said on Saturday.

The ship is "heading toward the Fujairah-Khor Fakkan area" in the UAE, the head of ports for Iran's southern province of Hormozgan told the semi-official news agency ISNA.

The tanker "has left Iran's territorial waters", he said, adding that it was being towed and sprayed with water to cool the hull.

A spokesperson for Frontline Management, the Norwegian company which owns the ship, said "all 23 crew members of the tanker departed Iran" and flew to Dubai on Saturday.

"All crew members are well and have been well looked after while in Iran," she said.
