INEC ANNOUNCE PDP'S CANDIDATE SENATOR BALA MOHAMMED WINNER OF BAUCHI GOVERNORSHIP SUPPLEMENTARY ELECTION.

Sunday, March 24, 2019 2:12 pm

Bala Mohammed

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has declared the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Bala Mohammed, as winner of the supplementary election in Bauchi State.

Returning Officer Professor Kyari Mohammed announcement on Sunday, that the PDP candidate polled a total of 6,376 while the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Muhammed Abubakar, who is the incumbent governor polled 5,117 votes in the supplementary election held on Saturday.

The Returning Officer, however, noted that he is in no position to make a return because the case involving the Tafawa Balewa LGA is still in court.

The Federal High Court in Abuja had on March 19 stopped the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from proceeding with the collation, conclusion and announcement of the result of the governorship election in the state held on March 9, 2019.

Justice Inyang Ekwo issued the order based on an ex parte application filed by the APC and the governor, Mohammed Abubakar.

Governor Abubakar had filed the application in court after he criticised the electoral body for its decision to continue with the collation of results after it had earlier declared the exercise in the state inconclusive.

INEC had declared the exercise inconclusive after the margin between the two leading candidates was said to be less than the number of cancelled votes.

According to the Returning Officer, Kyari Mohammed, results collated showed that the candidate of the PDP, polled 469,512 votes, while the candidate of the APC secured 465,453 votes.

The Commission, however, later insisted that it would resume the collation of results of Tafawa Balewa LGA on March 19 after considering a report submitted by the REC.

It also challenged the powers of the court to stop the collation and announcement of results.

According to its legal officer, Hassan Adamu, the court has no jurisdiction to interfere in post-election litigation.

Filing a counter affidavit, he argued that any post-election matter is exclusively reserved for the Election Petitions tribunal and not for any regular court.

The Commission, however, later agreed to hold the supplementary elections on March 23 in all other LGAs except Tafawa Balewa.

PDP REJECTS KANO GOVERNORSHIP RESULT

Monday, March 25, 2019 12:00 am

Abba Kabir-Yusuf

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the results of the Kano State governorship election which declared Abdullahi Ganduje as winner.

The party said  candidate, Abba Yusuf, was the rightful winner of the Kano state governorship election, stating that any declaration that did not reflect such could not stand.

A statement issud by its spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, said Yusuf, won the Kano state governorship election since March 9, 2019, having fulfilled the constitutional requirement of securing the highest number of votes and the statutory 25% in two-thirds of the state.

However, the supplementary governorship election in Kano overturned what would have been for them a victory.

Hence, the party described the supplementary polls as “a national disgrace” and a mere figure allocating exercise by compromised INEC officials, who collaborated with power drunk politicians in the All Progressives Congress (APC) to award results to the APC candidate”.

The party cautioned INEC against any attempt to alter figures, noting that that will be a clear recipe for anarchy and a serious crisis in the state.

The party said the people of Kano had a long history of firm resistance against corrupt and oppressive forces, adding that the will of the Kano people must not be stretched in this election.

According to PDP, no amount of machination could cow or force the Kano people to abandon their resolve for a new governor in Abba Yusuf.

INEC vacates court orders, says supplementary election will hold in Bauchi, Adamawa

Published

March 21, 2019

The Independent National Electoral Commission has said that the supplementary governorship election earlier scheduled to hold in Bauchi and Adamawa states will still hold, even though the issue has become a subject of litigation.

The litigation on the Bauchi governorship election, INEC said, was initiated by the All Progressives Congress and its candidate, Mohammed Abubakar.

Taking to its verified Twitter handle @inecnigeria on Thursday, INEC said an interlocutory injunction to suspend the process has been served on the Commission by the Federal High Court, Abuja.

“While the Commission has complied in accordance with its policy to obey all court orders in deference to the rule of law, it has also taken urgent steps to vacate the order and dismiss the action,” INEC said.

It noted that the litigation and consequential order only affect the collation of results for the governorship election in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area.

“Consequently, the supplementary elections will proceed as scheduled on Saturday, 23 March in the other 15 Local Government Areas of Bauchi State as well as the Kirfi State Constituency Supplementary Election in Kirfi Local Government Area,” the Commission said.

Similarly, INEC said, the Adamawa State High Court had issued an injunction restraining the Commission from proceeding with the supplementary election following the application by the Movement for the Restoration and Defence of Democracy, a registered political party which did not take part in the main election.

It said that though the Commission had also complied with the order, it has also taken steps to vacate it and dismiss the action.

“Notwithstanding the legal action over the Supplementary Governorship election, elections will hold in Nassarawo/Binyeri State Constituency in Mayo–Belwa Local Government Area where the election had to be countermanded following the death of a candidate before the polls, as well as the supplementary State Constituency election and Uba/Gaya State Constituency in Hong Local Government Area,” INEC said.

UEFA fines Ronaldo $22,000 for celebration gesture

Published

Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo has been fined 22,600 dollars by UEFA for appearing to make an obscene gesture while celebrating his side’s Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid.

The Portugal international was guilty of “improper conduct,’’ the control, ethics and disciplinary body of the European football organisation ruled on Thursday.

Ronaldo had gestured to his crotch following the final whistle after his hat-trick earned Juventus a 3-0 win over Atletico on March 12, which sent the Italians into the Champions League quarter-finals 3-2 on aggregate.

The gesture appeared to be a response to Atletico Coach Diego Simeone, who had celebrated in similar fashion during his team’s 2-0 win in the home leg.

Simeone was subsequently also fined 20,000 euros by UEFA.

INEC:RESUMPTION OF COLLATION, DECLARED OF RIVERS ELECTION RESULTS TO HOLD BETWEEN APRIL 2 AND 5.

• Says only court can upturn its decision on Okorocha, others

By Adedayo Akinwale in Abuja

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared that the resumption of collation and announcements of gubernatorial election  results in Rivers would take place  between 2nd and 5th of April, 2019.

Disclosing this at a press conference Thursday in Abuja, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman Voter Education and Publicity, Mr. Festus Okoye, also said that the decision of the commission on the Imo West Senatorial district which the Governor of the state Rochas Okoroacha reportedly won  could only be upturned by a court of law.

The commission had on the 10th of March suspended all electoral processes in Rivers State having determined that there was widespread disruption of collation of results of the elections conducted on March 9, and after the invasion of the collation centre in Port Harcourt by soldiers.

The commission had set up a fact-finding committee to assess the situation and report back within 48 hours. The committee set up by INEC later established that the Governorship and State Assembly elections in Rivers state took place in most of the polling units and results were announced.

The committee also established that the results from 17 Local Governments out of 23 were available and  in the Commission’s custody, adding that the declaration and returns for 21 State Constituencies out of 32 were made prior to the suspension.

The committee stated: “INEC expresses its displeasure with the role played by some soldiers and armed gangs in Rivers State disrupting the collation process and attempting to subvert the will of the people.

“INEC is committed to expeditious completion of the collation process where results of the elections have been announced.”

The electoral body therefore assured that  it would issue detailed timelines and activities for the completion of the election on Wednesday, March 20th, 2019.
